UBuildABook offers two book binding options: hard cover (case bound) and soft cover (perfect bound).

The short answer

Hard cover is the highest quality binding available: a printed, laminated cover glued on heavy board, making a very durable book. Soft cover perfect binding glues the pages into a wrap-around cover like a paperback, costs less, and is great for novels, manuals and programs. Both are available in small runs.

Hard cover binding

Cased hard cover binding is the highest quality binding available. Our 80# printed cover is laminated and glued on heavy board to make a smooth outside cover. The book block is then attached to the inside of the board, making a very durable book cover.

We offer hard cover book binding in small runs. Dust jackets are also available.

Soft cover perfect binding

Soft cover perfect bound books are great for training manuals, sports programs, novels and any thick paperback. Perfect binding is the standard for paperbacks. Here is how it works:

  1. Digitally printed pages are clamped together.
  2. The pages are drawn across a blade that carves notches in the bound edge.
  3. This roughed up spine passes over a hot melt glue dispenser.
  4. Glue adheres to the edges and works its way into the notches.
  5. The glued pages are pressed into what becomes the wrap-around cover.
  6. The cover is folded around the book block and up the front and back of the book.

Which binding should you choose?

  • Choose hard cover when the book should last and feel substantial, such as a family history, a children's book or a yearbook.
  • Choose soft cover when price per book matters most, or for novels, manuals, handbooks and programs.
  • Not sure? Price both and compare.
